One of the most common questions we get from buyers who are new to purchasing equipment online or out of state is about shipping. How does it work? What does it cost? Who arranges the truck? What happens if something gets damaged? These are all fair questions, and the answers matter because shipping is a real cost and a real logistical challenge that can turn a good deal into a frustrating experience if it is not handled properly. This guide walks through everything you need to know.
At LiftWorks USA we handle all shipping logistics for our customers. You do not have to figure out trucking companies, freight brokers, or delivery coordination. We take care of the full process from our facility to your door. That said, understanding how it works helps you plan for what to expect on your end.
How Forklifts Are Transported
Forklifts are transported on flatbed trucks, step deck trailers, or lowboy trailers depending on the machine's dimensions and weight. Standard warehouse forklifts in the 3,000 to 8,000 lb capacity range are typically transported on flatbed or step deck trailers. Larger industrial machines may require a lowboy or specialized heavy haul equipment.
Multiple forklifts are sometimes consolidated on a single trailer, which can reduce per-unit shipping cost when logistics work out. Single-unit shipments on a dedicated flatbed are also common, particularly for buyers in less accessible locations or when the machine needs to be the only cargo.
The machine is loaded with a crane or by driving it onto the trailer under its own power, then secured with chains and binders to prevent movement during transport. Proper securement is critical. A forklift that shifts in transit can be damaged and creates serious hazards for other road users.
What Shipping Costs
Forklift shipping cost varies significantly based on distance, machine size, and current freight market conditions. General ranges for reference:
- Regional (under 500 miles): $400 to $900 for a standard warehouse forklift
- Mid-distance (500 to 1,500 miles): $700 to $1,400
- Cross-country (1,500 miles and above): $1,000 to $2,000
- Heavy industrial machines: Higher across all distance bands due to specialized equipment requirements
These are general estimates. Actual cost depends on the specific origin and destination, the machine's dimensions and weight, current fuel prices, and available carrier capacity on the specific lane. When you request a quote from LiftWorks USA, we include shipping cost in the quote so you have the full delivered price before you commit to anything. No surprises.
What You Need to Have Ready for Delivery
Receiving a forklift delivery requires a bit of preparation on your end. Here is what you need to have in place:
Unloading Equipment
The delivery truck brings the machine to your facility but typically does not have its own offloading equipment. You need to be able to get the machine off the trailer. Options include:
- A working forklift on-site to assist with offloading
- A loading dock at the right height for the trailer to back up to
- A dock plate or yard ramp if your dock height does not match the trailer
- In some cases, a crane or rough terrain forklift for heavier machines
If you do not have unloading capability on-site, let us know when you order. We can often arrange liftgate or crane-equipped delivery for an additional fee, or we can coordinate with a local equipment company to assist with your offload.
Clear Access and Space
A flatbed truck and trailer needs room to maneuver at your facility. Confirm you have adequate driveway width, turning radius, and unobstructed access to where you want the machine delivered. Low overhead obstructions like tree branches and utility lines are worth checking in advance.
Someone On-Site to Receive
Someone authorized to accept the delivery needs to be present. You will need to inspect the machine on arrival and sign the delivery receipt. Do not let a driver leave without completing the delivery inspection described below.
Inspecting on Arrival: What to Do Before You Sign
This is the most important practical step on delivery day. Before you sign the delivery receipt or release the driver:
- Walk around the machine and look for any damage that may have occurred during transport. Compare what you see to the condition documentation and photos from before shipment.
- Check that all components are present: forks, propane tank if applicable, charger for electric units, any accessories that were included in your purchase.
- Note any damage on the delivery receipt before signing. If you sign the delivery receipt without noting damage, freight claims become substantially more difficult to resolve. Even minor damage should be noted on the paperwork.
- Take photos immediately at the time of delivery of any concerns, with the truck and trailer visible in the background as timestamp evidence.
Freight damage is uncommon but it does happen. A clear paper trail from delivery day makes resolution straightforward.
