What Drives the Price Up or Down
Within any machine category, the same model can range by $10,000 or more depending on a few key factors:
Hour Meter Reading
Hours on a forklift are like miles on a car, but forklifts are built to run much longer. A well-maintained forklift at 10,000 hours is not a problem if it has been properly serviced. That said, lower hours generally mean higher price. Units under 5,000 hours command a premium. Units over 15,000 hours come in cheaper but may need more attention over time.
Lift Capacity
A 3,000 lb forklift and a 15,500 lb forklift in the same category can be worlds apart in price. Heavier capacity means heavier frame, bigger engine or battery, and more structural complexity. Our standard warehouse units range from 3,000 to 15,500 lb capacity. Heavy industrial units go up from there.
Mast Configuration
A two-stage mast and a quad mast on the same model can differ by several thousand dollars. Quad masts and three-stage full-free masts allow higher lift heights and are required in high-rack warehouse environments, so they cost more.
Condition and Refurbishment Level
Not all refurbished forklifts are the same. Some dealers slap a coat of paint on a used unit and call it refurbished. At LiftWorks USA, every unit is fully rebuilt and tested before it ships. That means mechanical systems, hydraulics, drive systems, and safety components are gone through before the machine leaves our facility. You are paying for a forklift that works, not one that looks like it works.
Brand
Toyota, Crown, and Hyster tend to hold value and come in at slightly higher prices on the used market because of their reputation for durability and the wide availability of parts. Clark and Yale offer comparable quality at slightly lower price points in many cases. We carry all major brands.
Electric vs. LP Gas Pricing
Fuel type has a meaningful impact on price, especially when you compare across a large inventory:
| Fuel Type | Units in Stock | Starting At | Average Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Electric | 114 | $2,950 | $22,835 |
| LP Gas and Diesel | 59 | $5,950 | $36,153 |
Electric units are more affordable on average, though battery health is the key variable on a used electric forklift. Always ask about the battery age and condition before buying. A weak battery can cost $3,000 to $8,000 to replace and will cut your runtime significantly until it is addressed.
LP gas and diesel units cost more partly because of the mechanical complexity of internal combustion engines and partly because they include heavier-duty frames designed for outdoor and multi-shift use.
How Does Refurbished Compare to New?
A new 5,000 lb cushion tire forklift from a major brand runs between $28,000 and $45,000 depending on options and dealer markup. A comparable refurbished unit from our inventory averages around $26,950, and we have units in that category starting at $6,950.
For buyers who need the latest technology, warranty coverage from a manufacturer, or a machine with zero hours, buying new makes sense. For the vast majority of businesses that need a forklift that performs reliably and want to avoid the depreciation hit that comes with new equipment, refurbished is the smarter investment.
New forklifts lose a significant portion of their value the moment they leave the dealership. A well-refurbished unit has already absorbed that depreciation. You get the function without the financial loss.
What About Shipping Costs?
We ship nationwide and handle international orders regularly. Shipping cost depends on your location and the size of the unit. Lighter machines like order pickers and walkies cost less to transport than heavy pneumatic units. When you contact us for a quote, we include a shipping estimate so you have the full picture before you decide.
California customers can often arrange local pickup or local delivery at a reduced rate. Give us a call and we will figure out the most cost-effective option for your location.
