Cushion vs. Pneumatic Tire Forklifts: Which One Do You Need?

By LiftWorks USA  |  Updated March 2026  |  6 min read

When customers call us about buying a forklift, tire type comes up in almost every conversation. Not because it is a complicated decision, but because buying the wrong one costs you. A cushion tire forklift on a gravel lot wears out fast and rides rough. A pneumatic on a polished warehouse floor is awkward and oversized. Getting this right saves you money from day one.

Here is a straight breakdown of what each tire type is built for and how to decide which one belongs in your operation.

What Are Cushion Tire Forklifts?

Cushion tire forklifts use solid rubber tires that are pressed directly onto the wheel rim. There is no air inside, which means no flats, no blowouts, and no pressure checks. The tradeoff is that the ride is firmer and the ground clearance is lower.

Cushion tires work best when:

  • You are working indoors on smooth, sealed concrete
  • Your operation is in a warehouse, manufacturing plant, or distribution center
  • You need a tighter turning radius in narrow aisles
  • Floor conditions are consistent and well-maintained

Because cushion tire units sit lower to the ground, they are more maneuverable in tight spaces. The smaller footprint also means lower purchase prices. From our current inventory, refurbished cushion tire forklifts average around $26,950, with units starting as low as $6,950 depending on capacity and hours.

What Are Pneumatic Tire Forklifts?

Pneumatic forklifts use tires that look and function more like those on a truck. They come in two styles: air-filled (standard pneumatic) and solid foam-filled (solid pneumatic). Both have deeper tread and more ground clearance than cushion tires, which makes them the right tool for outdoor and mixed-surface work.

Pneumatic tires work best when:

  • You are working outdoors, on loading docks, or on uneven surfaces
  • Your lot has gravel, asphalt, wood chips, or other rough terrain
  • You move between indoor and outdoor surfaces regularly
  • You need higher ground clearance to navigate ramps or lips

Pneumatic units are heavier and wider, which means higher stability on rough ground but less agility inside a building. From our inventory, refurbished pneumatic forklifts average around $43,387, with the price range running from $14,950 up to $157,950 for high-capacity units. The higher cost reflects larger engines, heavier frames, and the demands of outdoor use.

The Question That Settles It

If you are unsure which direction to go, ask yourself one question: Will this forklift ever go outside or on an uneven surface?

If the answer is no, you probably want cushion. If the answer is yes, even occasionally, you want pneumatic. Using a cushion tire unit on rough ground wears the tires down fast and creates vibration that is hard on the operator and the machine. It is not worth the savings.

If your operation genuinely runs on both surfaces, some buyers opt for solid pneumatic tires, which give you outdoor capability without the flat tire risk of air-filled pneumatics.
